Family Tree Maker: Program Update

From the Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker Blog

Family Tree Maker: Program Update

Hello Everyone,

We are soon going to release a small program update to Family Tree Maker 2010, which will address some of the requests you’ve made here on the blog and in other forums.  Here are some of the highlights:
  1. Improved Relationship Calculator. Direct-line relationships now take precedence over less direct lines.
  2. Greater control over hinting. A new option lets you turn tree hints off, so you can get hints from records only. See the new check box in the Options dialog. Also, the program will stop hinting on trees owned by the logged in user, as well as not hinting records that have been downloaded with a tree from Ancestry.com.
  3. Improved data and formatting in a number of reports.
  4. Improved support for GEDCOM, PAF and Legacy import.
  5. Many other small changes throughout the program to help it run more smoothly.
We appreciate your feedback and suggestions. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us; they have helped us tremendously in preparing this update.

Please watch for the update in the next day or two. When it’s ready, a prompt will display in Family Tree Maker after you start the program. For those of you using Vista or Windows 7, make sure to right click on the Family Tree Maker 2010 shortcut and chose the “Run as Administrator” option to ensure you receive the notification. More detailed information regarding the patch, as well as links to download the patch directly, can be found at the following location starting tomorrow morning: http://www.familytreemaker.com/Support/Patch_2010.aspx.
Thanks!

  1. Michelle, is there somewhere I can read about the changes you didn't list in your post? Specifically the "Improved data and formatting in a number of reports." and the "Many other small changes throughout the program to help it run more smoothly." It would be much appreciated!

    Thanks!

  2. Jim,

I haven't see any details of the patch. I posted all of the details that were posted on their Blog. The Knowledge Base website doesn't have any additional information either. Sorry.

  3. No biggie Russ, but I was hoping to see what might be causing some slowness since updating. The longer FTM is open now the worse it gets, until finally I have to close it and reopen it. If I compact the DB or backup after running FTM for a few hours, it crashes, whereas if I do that shortly after starting it all is fine. Something changed - one or more of those "many small changes" I guess - that is not agreeing with my machine here!

    Thank you.

  4. Jim,

Are you saying that 2010 has slowed down since the most recent patch that was talked about in the Blog?

Are these crashes a new problem?

What version of Windows are you using?

What is the Product Version (Help, About) in Version 2010?

  5. Russ,

Yes, just since the slowdown; wasn't a problem here before. Win XP Pro SP2, AMD Athlon dual core 2GHz processor, 4 GB RAM, & 1.5 TB HDD space w/65% free. FTM 19.0.0.206 - the patch released last week.

I submitted to support and they directed me to a KB article about deleting left over files and folders from the original installation - said it is a problem for some users. I did so and things definitely got speedier, but compacting the DB still causes FTM to close unexpectedly when it finishes.
